In-House vs Pre-Printed Labels

Having labels printed in-house or outsourced are both great ways of identifying your assets; each has its benefits. Here we explain the differences between the two so you can decide which one works best for your needs.

Printing labels yourself (in-house) is a task that is very doable for some companies because, even when you don’t have the equipment you need, it can still be affordable. It gives you the convenience of having labels when and where you want them, as well as making it easy to change the design whenever you want. The downside is that the design may not be the greatest quality (usually about 300dpi) and will probably be in black and white. If you decide to use a hand labeller because they are convenient, you are even more restricted on what can be put on them.

The other downside of in-house printing is that there will be a limit on the materials you can get hold of, especially if you are working with a small budget. This will make the quality of the labels lower and they may need changing more frequently because the materials are less durable. You will also be limited to the size of your printer.

The other option is getting pre-printed labels from companies like us. The main benefit will be that they will end up being of higher quality because we have wider access to materials and adhesives. This will make a more durable label that will last longer on the asset and not need to be changed as frequently. We can also obtain the materials and equipment to create labels for specific operations such as adding a clear wrap-around to help it stay on a label or shackle.

At a specialist label maker intricate designs such as logos, pictures and barcodes can fit on much smaller labels because of their increased printing accuracy (1200dpi plus). We would be able to print them in full colour and can also help you design the labels to make the best use of the space.

Because we order labels in bulk the price will drop and makes it a lot more cost-effective. Along with the benefits of not having to buy the printing hardware, it is likely to make it a lot more cost-efficient than in-house printing.

Both of these options have different pros and cons depending on your business priorities. Printing labels in-house means you can easily change your label design and have full control of the materials being utilised. However, pre-printing is a lot more convenient and can be much higher quality, whilst potentially working out cheaper.
